Presenting a fair copy of the poem Ulalume (MA 325), but fearing that she "will find the verses scarcely more intelligible to-day in my manuscript than last night in my recitation." Saying that he would "endeavor to explain ... what I really meant" had he not recalled Dr. Johnson's "rather just remarks about the folly of explaining what, if worth explanation, should explain itself."
